Huntington's Disease Association
Huntington's Disease is a genetically inherited disorder that results in the progressive loss of control of both the body and mind. Each child of an affected parent has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the disorder, which affects both males and females, and causes cells to be destroyed at an early age. The disease causes changes in the areas of movement, personality and intellect.
Children as young as two have been diagnosed with Juvenile Huntington's but many people do not show symptoms until 20-30 years. By the time they have been diagnosed sufferers of the disease have quite often had children and passed on the gene. At present there is no cure and no way to stop the relentless destruction of brain cells.
The Australian Huntington's Disease Association (SA & NT) Inc. provides services and support for families affected by the disease, by providing information and education to families, care providers and medical professionals, students and the general public. Services provided include a weekly Day Program for sufferers, careers meetings and retreats, and family meetings.
