The first 'House of Hope' was built at
Rostrevor in 1962. The project offered the opportunity
for a member of the public to win a home and land package.
A fee of 20-25 cents allowed entrants
to guess the value of the home - the person guessing
the exact or the closest value won the prize. Auditors
held sealed envelopes from each supplier for every component
of the home and after the competition date these were
opened and totalled. All entry forms were checked and
the winner announced.
When Licensing Laws came into effect
in South Australia in 1971 Channel 9 Telethon took advantage
of the opportunity and transformed the 'House of Hope'
fundraising project into the Home and Land Lottery.
