In 1961, Dame Ruby
Litchfield formed a special committee to conduct the
Miss Telethon Quest. Quest entrants conducted fundraising
activities in support of local charities during a one-year
period. At the conclusion of their fundraising year
the entrants were judged, and Miss Telethon and Miss
Telethon Charity Queen were crowned in a glittering
televised ceremony.
The first "Miss
Telethon" was Ann North, who became a national
personality with the children's show 'Here's Humphrey'.
Originally only open
to single women aged 16 or older, in later years the
Quest expanded to include both single and married men
and women.
The Quest became an immensely popular
event which attracted more than 2,000 entrants. During
the time the Quest ran - 33 years - over $5 million
dollars was raised for South Australian charities.
