TELETHON HOUSE OF HOPE - HOME & LAND LOTTERIES |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The first 'House of Hope', built in 1962 by Hickinbothams and located at Rostrevor, offered the chance to win a home and land package. For an entry fee of 20 to 25 cents, the public could guess the value of the home - the closest guess determining the winner. Auditors held sealed envelopes from each supplier containing values of every component of the home, and after the competition date these were opened and totalled. All entry forms were then checked and the winner announced. As a special promotion for one-year only, in 1970 the House of Hope was replaced with the Telethon Village at Monalta. Architects and builders from 5 different companies showcased their homes and the winner was able to choose their new home.
The original House of Hope
concept continued for 10 years, developing ultimately into the Home
and Land Lottery as we know it today.
Channel 9 Telethon acknowledges the long term sponsorship of 2 leading South Australian builders with this project. Mr Gordon Pickard of Fairmont Homes who donated a total of 13 lottery homes, and Mr George Flourentzou of Distinctive Homes who has donated 7 lottery homes to date and has promised at least 3 more! This project which has raised
in excess of $6million, has supported more than 40 South Australian
charities.
